The Last Dance
The “Last Dance” is a documentary film currently in production. Roriston has the privilege of filming, for the first time in history, the mysterious Elephant people of Galana, Kenya— the Watha.
The Watha are an ancient culture who up until a single generation ago were living as hunters gatherers. The Watha were respected by neighbouring tribes for their unrivalled mastery in tracking and stalking the largest land animal on earth: The elephant!
Due to the blanket hunting ban instituted nationwide across Kenya, revered Watha hunters defaulted to the degrading status of "poachers" simply for being as they have been for hundreds of generations.
With only some few, scattered hundreds of them left, The Last Dance may very well be the only documented evidence of these exceptional people before the Watha culture is lost forever.
The Last Dance will illustrate the Watha demonstrating their legendary cultural practices of tracking large game and show their expert understanding of animal behaviour and reverence of their quarry.
The Last Dance will also show the struggles of key figures in the community as they attempt to retain their cultural identity as the greatest trackers of African elephant through legitimate forms of employment. Roriston is the proud partner of the Watha community in developing a photographic safari and bush-training program where Roriston clients can experience the unrivalled intimacy with the African elephant through the eyes and grace of Watha trackers.
